iPods in their ears. Flip flops on their
feet. Meet your newest employee? Yep! That’s right. Generation
Y is here.
Otherwise known as Millennials or Echo Boomers, 76 million
strong, this latest generation to enter the work force is
causing quite a stir. Fortune, Business Week, and 60 Minutes
are just a few of the big guys to focus on who they are and
how to work with them.
A generation that grew up hearing that they were special,
getting trophies for participating and being protected with
“Baby On Board” signs and antibacterial soap. They believe
they can do anything. And their Baby Boomer parents are
promoting this...
However, as Baby Boomer bosses, we don’t understand what that
means. We don’t get it when parents want to talk to us because
we didn’t give their Gen Yer the wage increase they were
expecting. We don’t understand it when our Gen Y employee has
to take a call from their parent, but our own kids won’t take
our call because they are in a meeting.
Understanding how to work with each of the generations
currently in the workforce has become critical to recruiting
and retention. The number of associations and companies
requesting and training on this subject has skyrocketed in the
last six months. Are you prepared?
